DON’T GET RIPPED OFF WHEN BUYING A NEW CAR!
Learn how smart buyers are avoiding this common SCAM

When John Thomas of Lynwood, WA bought a used car, he thought he did everything right. He checked the oil, got a CARFAX report, and saw that there were no warning lights on the dash.
Three days later, the car died while his girlfriend was driving.

“I was in the middle of traffic with my daughter. What am I supposed to do?" asked Candice MacDonald.
According to the mechanic, the car needed a new engine. HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED?
Mechanic Dave Eames of Pittman Automotive in Seattle questioned why the vehicle's check engine light never appeared. He suspected the check engine light had tried to signal a warning but for some unexplained reason was not visible.
"The check engine light will usually come on and tell someone there is something going on that should be corrected before you have catastrophic damage," Eames said.

HE WAS RIGHT!
Someone had placed TAPE over the check engine light, blocking it from view and causing Thomas to miss the warning about a dangerous problem with his car. Once the tape was removed and the dash reinstalled, the check engine light lit right up, as if on cue.

All vehicles manufactured after 1996 have sophisticated onboard diagnostic systems that can reveal significant mechanical problems.
FRAUDULENT SELLERS are disabling the check engine lights so you can’t tell that anything is wrong with the car until it’s too late! This may lead to minor inconveniences, but could potentially hide a problem that could potentially cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars. Or worse, it could be a problem that puts the life of you or your passengers in jeopardy!
Don’t fall victim to an expensive repair disaster or WORSE, just because some sleazy guy from Craigslist wants to make a quick buck!
SCAM ARTISTS WILL
Color over the dashboard with black marker
Use computers to turn off the engine light

Frank Leutz, owner of Desert Car Care Service Centers in Arizona, said check engine lights that have been tampered with are becoming a common problem in his garage, especially with cars bought through Craigslist.
"This has got to be the lowest that I've ever seen," Leutz said. "It is pure malice."
